Mechanics
The basic mechanics of Creatures of the Dark are designed to achieve a sense of tactical simplicity and tension, where every roll of the die is fraught with the possibility of tragedy and dread.
Actions are the most basic element of story-telling and dice are used to determine whether actions attempted by the player characters achieve their desired ends, or other ends entirely.
When two actions come into conflict with one another, the dice, and the choices behind them, determine who prevails over whom, and who is left bloody or broken in the wake.
The best laid plans of monsters and angels take time to unfold, and plots represent the progress of these plans towards triumphant success or catastrophic failure.
Every player character is a creature of intense passion and need, as well as a creature of the dark. Such creatures rely on their bonds with other characters to preserve a small vestige of their nearly forgotten humanity.
